Vanuatu 2012 official results - lobbying Govt formation

Vanuatu official election results indicates there will definetly be a coalition of different political parties and political groupings. The bigger parties VP (Vanuaku Pati) UMP (Union of Moderate Party) and NUP (National United Party) secured seats in the general election but not greter than 10 seats each.

MP Ralph Reganvanu's GJP (Graon mo Jastis Pati) have also managed to secure 4 seats according to the official results. This is something very exciting especially for a newly formed party to secure such amount of seats indicates that people are now choosing leaders based on their transparency and accountability of their MP allocations. This has been something MP Ralph has been very wisely doing, something the other MPs never do.

Currently VP, UMP and GJP plus Wille Jimmy's LDP (Liberal Democratic Pati) all have joined together to form a block but their number is just not enough to compete with the current care-taker Prime Minister's grouping MP Sato Kilman. Mr Kilmans group has most of the other indeependent candidates plus another political grouping (Alliance group) which their number they claimed to have 30 MPs on their side.

We now have less than twenty days left before a Government must be formed according to the law therefore lobbying is currently taking place. Everyone in Port Vila their hopes are that VP, UMP, GJP and LDP form the next government because they are sick of Sato Kilman's coalition with the alliance group BTW Ralph GJP used to be in that alliance group in the previous government , in this term Ralph joined VP, UMP block.

Way foward ?

One thing they (VP,UMP,GJP<LDP) could do is get NUP into that block BUT again NUP has issues with UMP on one previous term when UMP broke an agreement with NUP more heavily that agreement they broke was solidified through exchange of mats at a custom ceremony (something highly valued by the NUP leader since he is a high cheif of Penticost MP Ham Lini ). When UMP leader told NUP leader we will never leave that boat only when you leave we leave then later they broked the agreement it is something which cannot be easily mended. UMP needs to appologies to NUP through a custom reconciliation ceremony but this time what will UMP tell NUP.

China Huawei and 80% worlds communication

Should the Vanuatu Government be weary of Chinese Government monitoring its information system ?

What information does the Vanuatu Government has that would be valuable to the Chinese and others.

These are some questions to ponder about when a recent study claims to have some substantial prove that Chinese Government owned companies “Huawei” and “ZTE” have access to backdoors in the infrastructures of 80 percent of the telecommunication companies. The Vanuatu Government engaged itself with the Chinese Government by committing to a loan to further its own Government network, the e-government network’s purpose is to decentralize the services of the Government to rural areas without heavily depending on private sector ISP and telecom companies as previously , another reason was to reduce highly exaggerated service cost passed down by private companies. The Vanuatu e-government network is said to contain high speed internet connection 5 times the current speed of internet this is for the delivery of quality services. The Vanuatu Government engaged itself with Huawei the Chinese state owned company to facilitate the e-gov network, according to that recent published report by the blog ZNet Huawei company is the company which installs backdoors in the software and hardware devices of most servers. The research was carried out by a former pentagon analyst and claims that China already have 80 percent of the worlds telecommunication they have another 20% yet to concur.

As we are in the cyber-warfare age between countries it has become evident China is one of countries engaged in such activities as e-International relations has some views on that, one question the Vanuatu people should have in mind is that should the people of Vanuatu be afraid of China ? What valuable information Vanuatu has and should keep as a secret from China. The online privacy , identity theft and malware , virus terrorism are issues which we should consider as we are certainly becoming heavily dependent on the internet and information age.

Just imagine the power China has in its finger-tips for having access to 80% of the worlds communication, they can sell these information to marketing companies, sell these information to the black-market to use for malicious purposes, uses such information to suppress other countries e.g. USA and become more competitive in the digital economy which is more popular.

Monkey Business at VNPF

The Vanuatu National Provident Fund (VNPF) has become under the spot light again negatively because of some mal-practices and decisions taking place under the management and it board members.

There were allegations of :
  •  management remunerations to be very high
  • poor  investment decisions
  • nepotism in the recruitment of staff
  • vnpf vehicles
  • conflict of interest in investments (board members)
This has sparked a range of views from public (member ) to raise comments about these allegations. This issues has been very sensitive because the memories of the 1997 VNPF riots are haunting the minds of people especially business houses and the staff and board members of VNPF at that time. It is an issue which needs to be dealt with very carefully by the VNPF management and its board of Directors. The current Government of PM Sato Kilman seem to be very quiet with the VNPF issue, some critics are concluding the Government does not want to react but buy time till a riot erupts so they can prolong the election just to keep them in power further more.

The blogs which sparked the controversial news was Talemot which made headlines.

AVG antivirus on Ubuntu 10.10

My Acer Aspire One D250 Laptop has dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10 configured and installed. On the Ubuntu I usually insert most of the USB flash drives and external hard drives from the USB ports to view files since Ubuntu is known for being virus free.

However sometimes I decide to scan the USB thumb drives/ external hard drives in Ubuntu, BUT there is no per-installed anti virus software in Ubuntu. After few googling I found AVG anti Virus.

AVG has this free desktop antivirus which is cool.

I downloaded mine here http://free.avg.com/download.prd-alf and installed it. To scan from the terminal I typed sudo avgscan, if you need to update the antivirus you type in the terminal sudo avgupdate.

To scan you flash drives type sudo avgscan /media/ and the drive name if you know or just leave it as it is.

If you want to install AVG with a GUI go to here http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/.

More instructions on the AVG with GUI is found here http://www.howtoforge.com/avg_antivirus_ubuntu_feisty
